Shooter Down! The Dramatic Untold Story of the Police Response to the Virginia Tech Massacre eBook John Giduck Joseph Bail Reviews

By far the best analysis of the Virginia Tech Massacre available. As with his other book; THE TERROR AT BESLAN, Mr. Giduck's attention to detail and intimate knowledge of the event gained through direct interviews with those who were there provide a complete, and well rounded synopsis of events as they actually happened. This isn't a watered down or sensored version of the incident. Nothing is glossed over and words are not spared as the story is told as it must be to educate us as to what, why and how it happened and how we must respond to these events in the future. Having said that, despite not mincing words, I also appreciate Mr. Giduck's professionalism and the proper respect he accords the situation. After you read the book you'll know what I am talking about. There isn't an emergency responder out there who could not benefit from the lessons learned that are presented in this book.
In my opinion, this book is the ultimate tribute to both the victims and responders of this tragedy. We are able to honor their memories and their actions by learning from this event to hopefully prevent the next such horror. However, if we are unable to prevent it, how we can respond in a manner so that the most lives may be preserved.
To Mr. Giduck, well done again Sir. While it must be an extremely difficult process of interviewing, compiling and composing works of this nature, the purpose they serve is noble and worthy. I do hope a similar work on the Mumbai Attack is in the works and that we won't be too long in the waiting for it. There are many lessons to be garnered from that sad event as well.
it was a gift, but he seemed happy
I have never met John Giduck, but I am well aware of the work he does for law enforcement, and his reputation which in law enforcement circles is outstanding. His latest book Shooter Down is simply put a MUST READ for all law enforcement.
Shooter Down should also be read by anyone who wants to learn about the mindset of this type of killer and what the victims and survivors went through, a horrifying ordeal. Something no one should ever have to go through, but sadly a reality today we must be prepared for.
Shooter Down would make a great guide for universities and college campuses wanting to make threat assessment teams in an effort to prevent such tragedies. The importance of planning and preparation and the ability to ADAPT from those plans is a clear message of the book as well. Parents and quite frankly any concerned citizen would get much real life knowledge from reading this book. This knowledge would do much to bridge the gap between reality of police responses to these types of incidents which are quite frankly complex and chaotic, non-linear events that require much more than a linear, checklist or policy and procedures response.
The book also describes those officers who respond to this type of incident and what they go through both physically and mentally during the crisis and in its aftermath. You will clearly see it's not anything like television or the movies or how the news media portrayed it.
The After Action Review which in the book is called the Tactical Post Mortem is a must read as there is an honest and candid critique of the police response to this incident which should help shape and reshape thinking about the Virginia Tech Tragedy as well as future courses of action to this type of crisis in the future. The research and writing is outstanding and the lessons learned from this incident in law enforcement history are played out here in Shooter Down.
We are professionally obligated to do whatever we can to gain whatever experience we can without paying full price. That is precisely why we study past incidents and precisely why we should train and quite frankly precisely why you should read this book.
Thanks for doing the work and putting this book out to the masses. As a current 26 year law enforcment officer and trainer of cops, campus security professionals and a father of 2 college aged kids I found the information invaluable!
We often watch the news about terror attacks in other parts of the world but forget that they can happen right here in America. We are not immune to terrorists, call them Jihadist, deranged, or as a friend says "wackos." The book is a tribute to the men and women who prevented a bad situation from getting worse even when the school administration wanted to have a meeting to discuss the issues.
The media did a great deal to put down the police but in the final analysis they were wrong but as usual refused to admit their slanted news was in error.
When I purchased this book I thought it was very informative. I work at Virginia Tech. I have seen read that his books aren't credible. Who knows. I can't say I enjoyed reading it because it was so graphic and devastating but I wanted to know.
